| I am a Paramedic of 13 years out of 21 years of service, working in Coventry on Front Line as a mentor to trainee staff and Coventry University Degree and Diploma Paramedic students, for the newly formed West Midlands Regional Ambulance Service. During a rare quiet time on station I sat reading a publication on Emergency Triage by the Manchester Triage Group, and had to take all of the flack from my colleges, they could not get the gist of why I’d read something like this, I explained that I would be using it as part of my Continued Professional Development after completing a write up. From this bit of banter started quite a heated discussion on the merits of CPD and registration of the HPC, several of the paramedics present said that they would start looking at CPD when they were told how to and be looking towards our training department for the relevant courses needed to re-register. I could not believe they were still living in the past when training schools did every thing for us to keep us all up to date. I tried to explain that it is now our responsibility to seek the necessary courses and other evidence that will show to the HPC auditor that I have developed within my profession. The answer to this was who is going to pay for this? How will I get time off to do this? Its work I’m not doing it in my time, as this is not the first time I’ve had the same arguments with a lot of other colleges, I feel that there are possibly a large amount of staff all over the country that would have some serious problems if they would be one of the first 5% to be audited in August 2009, and not able to produce the 500 word written summery of practise history for the last 2 years, or the 1500 word written statement of how they have met the standards of CPD, along with the supporting evidence. All of the information can be found on this web site, entitled “Your Guide to Our Standards for Continuing Professional Development” or from the HPC web site. Please take this chance and check this out, without your CPD you won’t have registration and therefore NO JOB it’s your choice. |
